5 Quick Steps to Organize Your Home Office
By Mandy Buchanan
In order to be effective as a work at home mom it is important to have an organized home office, but this does not come naturally to everyone. How can you go about organizing your home office?
1. Home Office Organization Begins with Sorting
In order to organize it you should begin by sorting everything in the office into one of three different categories - keep, throw away and give away. The items in the throw away category are basically junk that no one else is going to want either, while the give away pile are items that may be useful to someone you know or to a charity but you are no longer using them. Only keep what you know you use or are going to be using within the next few months.
2. Purge
Once you have sorted all the different items into different categories, the next step in your home office organization is to purge. Throw away those items in the throw away pile, and take those items in the give away pile to their new owners. You want to be left with nothing but the items that you are keeping.
3. Plan
In order to have an effective home office it is important to plan your environment and to decide on a place for everything that will live in your office. Take a good long look at all the items you are keeping and then draw a plan of your office including the items of furniture and where you can store items. Now write down where each item is going to go.
4. Act
In order to complete your home office organization you need to put your plan into action and so now you will take each item and put it in the area that you have allocated for it.
5. Maintain
This unfortunately is where many people go wrong in their home office organization. They may even get in a professional organizer to help them organize it but within a few weeks it is a huge mess again because they have not properly maintained their office. It is important to ensure that each night everything gets put back in its allocated place and that you regularly make time to do a quick maintenance check on your office organization to ensure that your home office remains organized and effective.
Home office organization is important for the work at home mom as it enables her to function effectively and efficiently when many different demands are being placed on her. You can organize it by sorting, purging, planning and acting on your plan. Once your plan has been put in place make sure that you maintain that organization.
